Hi everyone, I just bought a new macbook with 80gb in hard drive. The thing is that when I turned it on for the first time I noticed it had 56 gb free of space. I checked and I did get the correct drive and everything, but just wanna know how can I get the most out of my disc, since I do plan to install windows for some of my mec. eng. apps.

by the way, I'm new to mac, this is my first mac and really want to enjoy it to the fullest.

thanks in advance.

PS-when suggesting I would really appreciate the instructions on how to do it since I'm completely new to mac and don't know the process. I'm working hard on it and playing with my computer a lot to get to know it but still am far from being even a newbie.

thanks

That sounds quite a bit lower than I'd expect. Did you get a deal where some software was bundled with it or something?

If you want to find out how space is being used, check out the program OmniDiskSweeper. It's helped me track down some strange wastes of space before.

I'll run it on my mac, I know there is an office preinstalled in there and some other software but don't know how to remove anything or format or don't know what to do once I run that software.

There is a lot of stuff preinstalled. To get the most out of your disk you'll have to do what Apple says only PCs have to do: delete the trial software.

Most efficient is it when you do a format of the disk and complete reinstall using the software restore disk.

When installing the operating system you can:
• choose not to install language versions you do not need
• not to install printer drivers you do not need. Always install the tiny GIMP-print drivers that support almost any printer but only require very little space

When installing the bundled software you can:
• not installing iDVD will save you GBs.
• not installing Garageband, or just not installing the demo songs will save you GBs.
• not installing iWork and Office demos will save you GBs.
• not installing any other of the bundled software you do not need.

iDVD is useful, though it does take up a bit of space. I wouldn't leave that out.

Still, though, those don't account for 10 GB. My PowerBook had the same crap installed, and I'm pretty sure it had about 10 GB more than that.

My MacBook for example doesn't have a SuperDrive. I saved may GB by not installing iDVD. What you want to keep and what not depends on your personal situation of course.

iDVD lets you save to disk images that can be burned on any other machine with a DVD burner.

And my mom's computer doesn't have a built-in burner, but she uses an external that I had lying around.
