Occasionally, in 10.4.7, and since I got my new mini, when I boot the computer up I get a message saying my startup folder (or an item in it, not sure) has incorrect security settings, and I can select to disable the item or fix the settings and reboot. I've fixed permissions and still get it occasionally. Does anybody know the reasoning behind this or why it might pop up?

Thanks,

What's in your startup folder? Under 10.3, I installed the Distributed.net client in my startup folder, and got this warning upon updating to 10.4, and since then, when I've installed in on 10.4 systems, have had to change permissions on the startup folder (temporarily) to get it to install, and then I get this message upon rebooting. Of course, since I know what I've done, I instruct the dialog to allow the process, and the warning doesn't come back.

Apple fixed the permissions on that folder between 10.3 & 10.4 & added the dialog precisely because this was a really good place for malware/trojans to be installed surreptitiously. Maybe you've somehow stumbled across a trojan that was written before 10.4 that's attempting to take advantage of this previous security hole.

Look in /Library/Startupitems and see what's there.

The only thing I added there was something like Steermouse to control my mouse before Logitech released its Intel drivers for its control center. When I took that out, I first started getting the message.

Suff I have in the StartupItems folder is three folders - HP IO, HP Trap Monitor, and WDMonacoService. I assume these go to my HP printers and my WD external HDD with Retrospect installed. Not sure if I can delete any of these and keep my printers and external working correctly.

PS, what I've found that I think is the problem relates to HP (of course):

figures. So long as you know there's nothing evil in the StartupItems folder, then you can okay the dialog to fix the settings.

Virtual PC 7 would give me that message after a fresh install and reboot, but I doubt you're trying to use that on a new (presumably Intel-based) Mac mini.
