I'll start by blaming the 11 year-old -I left myself logged in & she thought it'd be funny to change our log in names for rude comments... she's changed them back, but I find although I've logged in as myself, there's an extra user in the list who has all my library etc, & when I start up apps it asks me to register them (naturally, I can't find my old keys & passwords etc), & some apps tell me they can't find where to store my keychain.
Anyone got any ideas?

You'll have to describe you problem better. At least tell us what you mean by "the list" for god's sake.

My guess would be that your home folder names have been changed and new home folders have been created by logging in again. If that would be the case just renaming the old home folders would fix your problem. But without you describing the problem better I can not tell.

Thanks for your thoughts, & sorry if it doesn't seem clear: yeah, home folders- the list refers to the users shown up in the finder window as users -all 4 of us are there, but also... It has a folder with my old user name as well as a home folder pretty little house icon with my 'short' name... it includes a folder 'deleted users' & has 1 item in there -my daughter as a .dmg ?!?(though i can think of a better title for her). Log in window in sys. preferences doesn't have these extra users, & though I'm apparently logged in under my old account, picture, password etc, as I say every app. is mint new, bookmarks etc. were gone, each app. opens as if never used before. I've located my files (with some relief) & moved them across, but as I say I don't have a keychain & the computer can't find where to locate one.

re-naming hasn't helped -I'm still only to log in as a shadow of my former self... does anyone else have any ideas please?
