All,

I don't want to spread fear and panic but I have been noticing recently that I get more 'beach ball of death' cursors and it just seems that more is going wrong lately. Even my wife (known for her technophobia) said the other day 'its going slowly isnt it'.

I have noticed iChat, Mail and Safari are not as well behaved as they used to be. Now, this could be a co-incidence but I have the feeling that all this has happened after the 10.4.7 upgrade. What do you think?

For the record:

Me: Powerbook G4, 1GByte, 80Gbyte disc
Wife: MacMini G4, 512MByte, 80Gbyte disc

I don't believe that its slower, but I was kind of anticipating a slight jump up in performance, as experienced with 10.4.6.

Hmm - its just that things are going a bit wrong lately. I even rebuilt my powerbook from scratch as the build was at least 4 years old (transferred from old to new Powerbook at least twice). I dunno, maybe its the resources taken by new software and I need an intel 'book but it just seems I get more 'application not responding' when I have to do force quit to move on.

Maybe you need to do some system maintenance.

Perhaps the phone-home behaviors added in 10.4.7 are causing the slowdowns. On the other hand, is your HD getting above 80% full?

Curiously, the related story link underneath "Apple Mail may phone home" doesn't resolve. However, if you visit the source article and read the comments below it, you get a boatload of other phone-home behaviors. Note that most of those comments don't provide source links with details.

Widget version checking paranoia? Yeah, let me get my tinfoil cap out. Big whoop. Enough moaning about it, and Apple will probably put a preference in for it, and that's that. Or it'll be a Leopard feature.
