Hi all:
I am a relatively new PB user.I have a 12" 1.o Ghz Al PB with 10.4 OSX installed.I wuld like to know if i can download the 10.4.7 update (dmg) file from the apple site and install it.
I am afraid to experiment as i dont have OS installation disks.Would resstore CDs do the trick in case i run in to any OS problems?

Thanks in advance.

Yes and Yes. Simplest thing to do is to run Software update (open System Preferences and click the Software Update icon) and let it download and install all necessary updates (including those for Apple's applications) for you.

The Software Restore CDs will restore your machine to the factory state if you want.

And if everything messes up then you just do an "Archive and Install" this reinstalls the OS - but leaves your Apps and user files alone - i.e. you dont loose anything
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

yep - download the 10.4.7 combo updater. and then go ahead and run it.

If you dont have the correct updater it will just tell you - so theres no risk.

oh, and using the built in software update is ok with a dodgy internet conenction, as it can resume from where it was. and it downloads the whole thing before attempting the install.

no. it is an update, not a full install.

Nope - the updater will only contain the files needed to take 10.4 to 10.4.7. It doesn't include the entire OS. The archive and install option is made available when you are installing the entire OS from scratch (it will wrap up the prior version of the system in a folder and install a new copy in its place - you can choose to preserve your preferences and user accounts so that they are untouched by the process and available again after the install).

You would need to "Archive and Install" from the DVD that came with your PowerBook, thus bringing you back to 10.4.0. However, the odds of you needing to do that are almost nil, and would probably only happen if, for instance, your battery died halfway through the install.

EDIT: Ninja'ed not once, but twice!

thanks a lot guys.I did install the update. It went fine except one part..here how it went ...it rebooted after the update was installed ..it showed me the Os load(blue apple screen) for sometime...it stayed that way for some time..it rebooted itself again from here. But this time it went beyond the blue screen.I was able to login but it took like ages !
Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

it was the same here when going from 10.4 to 10.4.7 that is normal and now each reboot should be much faster.

The double reboot is normal for that update (the combo update). But it only does that once. Future reboots will get faster as the system self-optimizes the boot process.
