I just recently replaced my stock Macbook hd with a new Hitachi 100gb ordered from macsales.com
Anyway, the switch was smooth, and I go up to power the Macbook with disc 1 of the OSX installation cd package. As I go follow the on-screen instructions, i get to a page asking me to select a 'destination volume' to install the OS. Problem is, my new hd isn't being recognized. There's absolutely nothing in the options box to choose from so now I'm stuck.
I'm thinking the only plausible excuse is the hd isn't inserted properly, but wouldn't that mean the Macbook wouldn't even start if that was the case? I'd appreciate all the help I can get on this. I'd really love to have this up and running very soon. Thanks again.

The MB will start up as long as there is a startup volume, which in this case is the OS install CD. So do recheck the HD and make sure it is connected right. Take it out and reconnect. If it still does not mount, it could be defective.

It needs to be formatted as an HFS volume for the installer to recognize it. Is the drive recognized in Disk Utility? You will need to re-format there at an HFS Journalled Volume to install OS X

Correct. Anytime you install a new HD, you have to format it first in Disk Utility before you can continue with the installer. Boot from the install disc, go to Utilities-->Disk Utility and click on the Erase tab. Format it there, close the window, and proceed with the installation.
