Hi there folks. I was half a heartbeat away from buying a new macbook today, when I remembered that Leopard was probably going to be announced this next week. Does Apple typically allow recent purchasers to upgrade their OS for free or at a reduced price when these kinds of things happen?

Thanks a bunch.

Recent, as in about 2 weeks, yes.
But Leopard isn't expected until January at the earliest, so you'd be way too early buying a MacBook now.

Apple used to provide up-to-date coupons for discounts on upgrades, but I'm not sure if they still do.

Leopard pricing/upgrade policy have yet to be announced.

However:

The typical policy is that people who purchase new Macs after the actual ship date for the OS is announced will receive a free/low-cost media kit to upgrade.

Thanks for all the good info. I didn't realize we were still so far off from the actual release. I'll be heading back to the apple store today.

Why don't you wait until after the keynote address to see what's released/announced today?

In fact I did wait...only to go to the local Compusa (%5 discount on all macs) after the speech to find that they had no blackbooks in stock.
