I did a search, but i didn't find anything about this and i'm not really sure what words to search anyway.
Maybe these 3 issues aren't related. OS X 10.4.7
1. The icons of certain files are sometimes wrong, and the app used to open that file is affected by this. Sometimes, but not always, i can select the text of the file name, delete 1 letter, and the icon magically fixes itself and the opening app works again.
2. I get files that say Zero KB for file size. If i close the window then open again it usually shows the correct file size.
3. the Sort by date does not update the position of files unless i click on each file individually, which then updates the position. This is SOOOOO annoying, since i can't find my recent files, and when i do if i double click them, they move and i open something else lol
So many issues, please help. ... ku

I wonder if this could be a hardware problem, like the index of your hard drive being corrupted as a side effect?
This would be a good time to make sure you have backups of important stuff.

I'm not to familiar with this kind of thing... where does one bring a MAC to be fixed? Do MAC stores do that?

Chill
You can use Disk Utility (in applications -> utilities) to do a 'Verify' of your hard disk first.
If nothing major turns up, then it's something else. If there are errors, then you should boot using another disk, such as one of the disks that came with your Mac and use the Disk Utility available from there to do a 'Repair'.
I would however backup files before repairing. Then again, I backup everything all the time.

Go into /Library/Caches, and delete all the files you see whose names begin with "com.apple.LaunchServices" and end with "csstore". Then reboot, and see if that helps.
