im looking for a good way to adjust volume/change tracks when I'm away from the comp

Yes, the Apple Remote works when not in Front-Row-mode and you can adjust volume and change tracks in iTunes.

ok, one more thing- it'll work even though I don't have front row as well right?

if your machine came with the remote, test it out for yourself. if you don't have a remote, don't bother since it won't work on a machine that lacks an IR sensor.

My G4 at home is running front row with the hack. I'm gonna order an RF controller/adapter for $30 on amazon. I'm hoping it'll work at work with my imac. Worse case is just I use it at home

Also works in QuickTime Player and Keynote in my limited testing.
