Can I install OS X on a small external HD?

I know I can install it on an external drive, but I am wondering if there is anything small in size and easily transportable to install OSX on and use as a startup until I can get a new hard drive?

Like a flash drive... some small fire wire?

What are the minimum space requirements for OS X?

Thanks. I'm confused.

I think a Tiger install is like 2.5GB when you take out the printer drivers and extra languages/fonts and such. I'm not sure if they make cheap flash drives at that size, you are probably best off getting a cheap hard drive and external enclosure.
