System Preferences crashes when I open Desktop

I am running OS X, ver 10.3 and have an odd problem that I believe was caused when I deleted the photo that I had been using for my Desktop. The image remains on my desktop, but now System Preferences crashes immediately upon opening Desktop&Screen Saver. This keeps me from being able to change the photo to another.

I had this problem once before after deleting the Desktop photo. I was able to solve it that time by very quickly clicking on another selection under Desktop to change the image before the program crashed. Now the program crashes immediately, so that I cannot accomplish this.

I really need to change the image on the screen. It's an former girlfriend and she has to disappear from my computer screen before I can use my Mac in the presence my new girlfriend. Need help. Thanks.

Have you deleted the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist?
