hi all. i was wondering, does vault encrypt only the documents folder of an account, the entire account, or..........? i don't imagine it encrpts the entire account (i.e. library, apps, etc.) ultimately, i only care about all my personal files/information- docs, email, etc. thanks for the info!

FileVault encrypts your whole user account. That includes e-mail.

ok, so maybe i know this answer now that i have thought about it for more than 5 seconds....

does vault encrypt EVERYTHING under the home (i.e. account) folder? that would seem effective, but perhaps excessive, since there are so many system directories and ancillary directories such as music and pictures! is it really doing that? thanks.

Yes, it's *really* doing that. It creates an encrypted disk image which contains all your files.

Incidentally, the only "system" directory in your home folder is Library — which is where things such as your e-mail is stored.

Quite possibly one of the features of Leopard that hasn't been announced yet... one hopes.

You can work it around if you use symbolic links and point to directories that you have located outside your home folder.

Or you can selectively use encrypted disk images that you manage yourself, to encrypt only specific "folders." A bit more manual but finer grained and easy enough to manage.
