Random applications hang

I'm posting this here instead of applications because it pertains to any random application, so is likely an OS problem. I tried a search but couldn't find anything that pertained directly to my problem.

Lately, I've been having a lot of problems with random applications hanging. I'll just be working, and one application will suddenly beachball on me, and won't ever recover. I can still move the mouse, and even drag windows around, but I can't change the window focus to a new window, log out, restart, or anything. Finally, I have to unplug the computer to reset it.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

If the symptom is one application beach balls, then the rest also beach ball, that to me points to the hard drive. Do you hear any drive activity while it's occurring?

Hey, thanks for the responses.

It's not the hard drive...I tried running from a different drive, and had the same thing happen. I found it might be related to BitTorrent running. I haven't turned it on today, and I haven't experienced the problem. I'll keep crossing my fingers that that was it!
