Can I use a Tiger installation disc from another mac?

Hi all,

A friend recently purchased an iMac, which came with Tiger. I'm still using 10.3 and I'd like to upgrade however I've read that installing OSX Tiger that was meant for a different machine (I have a G5 dual 1.8) will cause problems.

Is this true?
Should I go out an purchase the OS?
