I was wondering if there were any apps out there that let you have virtual PPC macs under OS X? I've got an iBook G4 with Tiger on it and would like to be able to have a virtual OS 7.5.5 and OS 9.1 computers that hopefully run reasonably briskly.

I know for OS 9 apps I could use Classic mode although I wanted the full desktop environment for a few other reasons.

Thanks!

Yep, there's a program available that does that. It's called SheepShaver.

SheepShaver [Gwenole Beauchesne Wiki]

It will let you run virtual PPC Macs with OS 7.5.2 to 9.0.4 (9.1 is not supported). You need a ROM file for it to work, but you can get one (a NewWorld ROM) from a Mac OS system folder:

By the way, while SheepShaver can also run as an emulator on Intel Macs or even Windows or Linux, if you run it on a PowerPC Mac, it will work without emulation and deliver native speeds.

Damn, the only copy of OS 9 I have is 9.1. It's easy enough to get a rom as I have a PM 7200.

Of course, SheepShaver isn't virtualization: it's just an application (as is Virtual PC). It's not kicking the CPU into a new mode, the PPC doesn't 'do' CPU visualization at all. It's only as "Virtual" as you imagine it.

Emulator would be the correct term.

There is a true virtualizer for PPC OS X: Mac-on-Mac.

Mac-on-Mac

Unfortunately it's not compatible with Tiger, but if you have an old Panther machine, you can use it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
