Can't Force Quit - Spreading Beachball effect

This has been happening for a couple of weeks.

I launch an app and it just beachballs, forever. I can't Force Quit it even via the Terminal killall. Then the Finder also beachballs forever - also can't Force Quit or relaunch it. Meanwhile other app's continue to run. Some app's can be launcned (whereas others just beachball)

Run all maintenance scripts in Onyx (which sticks half-way through when this problem has arisen) and Repaired Permissions. The issue persists.

Any ideas?

I think it's the lookupd issue, where the service "lookupd" stalls with too many DNS requests. This means that apps that rely on it (which not all do) sit and wait for ever.

Either you wait (which can take hours) or you try to kill the lookupd service. Problem is, you can't launch Terminal.app, so you have to have a Terminal app open. You need root privileges to kill lookupd, and sudo also uses lookupd when authenticating, so that terminal must have a shell with root privileges open.

Antoher way is to have an app that does this for you in the background. Fortunately, someone hacked one up. I had that problem way back (related to one specific app that stalled lookupd) and installed the app above. That seemed to fix it (I haven't used that specific app in a while) and I haven't had any other problems from it.

im guessing you leave your mac on if you said it has been happening for weeks.

have you tried restarting?

Yes I leave my Mac on - but after this spreads to the Finder I can only limp along for so long without Restarting the Mac - a G5 2.0 DC btw.

Restarting has become my only solution.

Thus my uptime has been pretty limited of late.

Many thanks for your thought and the link - I'm trying it now. If I get over 24 hours uptime I'll hail it a success!

What apps are you running when this happens? Is one of them a Bittorrent client? And if so, do you have a Linksys router?

we might want to start looking at the hardware here.

Have you got the Apple Hardware Test CDs around? Have you tried memest? (Google memtest if youre not sure.)

First get SMARTReporter, a free utility that lets you monitor the state of your hard drive:

Search - VersionTracker

Second get Applejack, install it and run it at your next restart by starting up in single user mode, command-S. You don't to run the permissions since you've done it, run the other options.
