I set up an OS X for a student in my department this afternoon. I thought everything was fine but he phoned me back to say the desktop had changed on it after he restarted it. I wenrt over and found that it had reverted back to OS 9 with all the old settings. How could this have happened? The only thing I really did was set up the e-mail in Entourage and changed the username and password for the account. I asked the student what he did and he said he just emptied the 'Trash' folder. Does anybody have any ideas to whats happened?

He probably rebooted from OS 9. Just go to the Startup Disk control panel and choose OS X.

Thanks for the reply Chuckit. When you say 'Startup Disk control panel', do you mean there should be a menu with a choice of the 2 when you startup? Nothing like that is coming up.

If that doesn't help, zap the PRAM by holding command (the apple key) - option (the one next to it) - P - R when starting. Release when you've heard the startup-sound twice.

Or reboot and hold down Option key and select OSX partition. After restart, select startup disk
from System preferences and select OSX ...

They are probably opening an OS 9 program that is booting into Classic....

He probably doesn't have separate partitions.

Thanks for all the replies. Your tip worked Chuckit and its booting ok from OS X now. What would have caused it to boot from OS 9 in the first place?

They are probably opening an OS 9 program or clicking on data that was created in OS 9 that is booting into Classic....

Probably the computer somehow just hadn't been set to boot from OS X, so it was still booting from OS 9 like it always did. Normally it happens automatically, but it looks like somehow that got missed, so setting it in the Startup Disk did the same thing.

Doing that will not cause your computer to boot into Mac OS 9. It will only launch Classic within Mac OS X.
