I am a bit confused by the number of keychains I have now:
login
.Mac
'username'
System
X509Anchors

What's the difference between login and 'username' and what the heck is X509Anchors? I sync my keychains between my desktop and my laptop. Could that be part of it? Is there any way to consolidate them?

I started poking around because my iChats have started reporting errors in encryption and I recently received an email that couldn't be decrypted from an email address that has never given me problems before.

I don't know. I have:
login
Microsoft_Intermediate_Certificates
System
X509Anchors

The Microsoft one is empty and I can't unlock it because I don't know the password. I don't sync anything. I've never really looked at the list of Keychains before so I don't know when they appeared. It doesn't hurt anything in my case so I'm not concerned.

That's strange - I have never heard of applications creating keychains for themselves. I have system and login keychains.

Could the 'username' keychain be from my other computer? I think I have the same shortnames on both computers.

Did you upgrade from Panther? I think it had the user's keychain named with the shortname, rather than 'login'.

Thank you. That would explain it. I moved everything from username to login and everything still seems to be working correctly. It hasn't solved my iChat/Mail encryption problem. Unfortunately, that was in a different topic that the mods, of course, had to close because it involved an application and was posted in the osx forum. I guess I'm off to repost it...
