I run with File Vault turned on since my MacBook Pro could easily disappear if I'm not careful. I was using it fine earlier today, but the system froze up (trying to install Vista in Parallels) and I had no choice but to power down and start it up again. In the past, this hasn't been an issue, but now I can't log into my system again. Typing in the correct password will just freeze the system, and when I tried to use the Master Password to reset the password it won't accept anything I type in.

I think I'm screwed. Ugh. Any thoughts?

All that comes to mind is booting the installation CD and running disk utility to try repairing it. It may not be a File Vault problem.

I've heard speculation and conjecture from various places that File Vault isn't all it's cracked up to be, and it's safer to run with it off and use some third party encryption option to protect sensitive data (like encrypted PGP disk volumes for instance).

It's possible that the FileVault disk image is corrupted. You can try to mount it from another account. It's located in /Users/.username and called username.spareseimage. If it doesn't mount there is probably not much that can be done and you need to restore your data from your backup.

That is, if you have a backup, which I sure hope you do.
Linkinus is king.
