Can someone help me on how to repair a OSX install? I am new to macs and just recently screwed up my macbook to the point where it won't boot past "Starting Mac OS X." Can anyone give me step by step instructions to repairng the drive without deleting my files?

My windows drive still boots if that helps any.

Thanks

Repair instructions depend on exactly what is wrong. We can't give you any until we figure out what is causing the problem.

Can you tell us what you did recently, after which the MacBook no longer boots normally? Also, hold down command-v during startup, so it starts in text mode. Then copy or photograph the last dozen lines or thereabouts, so we can see exactly where it's tripping up.

Thanks for the help...

I am tried reinstall as rickey939 mentioned, however, after three attempts my computer tells me to try installing again (I have retail install discs), so I don't know what is going on there.

I just tried reinstalling again, this time wiping everything, but the wonderful macbook RSF has hit my computer for the second time in 10 minutes (I have avoided getting my computer repaired since I need it for school).

I guess if I can't get the fresh reinstall to work it will be time for my first apple store visit...

Thanks aain for the suggestions

Could you give the *exact* text of the error message you get when you try to reinstall?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Retail disks, as in the ones in the box off the shelf? They're PPC only... You should be using the ones that came with your MacBook.
