Hello from Australia and who will one day be a Mac Noobie (ie own his first Mac). Are there many other Aussies on these forums? My apologies if I have placed this in the wrong forum section.

My home PC currently runs Windows XP Pro and while it does have its share of problems, I really don't mind using it and because i've worked with PCs for a while it does make things a little easier when you know a bit about what you are doing. However, while i'm sure OSX has some flaws but offers a more secure environment, ease of use and some cool technologies from what i've seen and used, over the last few weeks i've been reading up on the newer Macs/OSX release and despite what appears to be a more expensive intial outlay, I am definately looking at making the switch to Mac.

Now i'm not switching entirely because of what was stated above that OSX offers, but because I want to try something new and it's not because of Windows security issues either, i'm lucky to never have had a major security problem and I use my computer sensibly. It's not because of the odd crashes here and there and a few other frustrating things, it's that i'm just completely bored with Windows and it's time to Mac the switch (please excuse my bad joke).

Of course the only downside is that I have a Mac fund going and currently saving towards one so it'll be some months yet and I have also decided to wait for the release of OSX Leopard (10.5). When the time comes to buy a Mac, i'll post here as i'll have a few questions based on my circumstances at the time of purchasing considering i'll be relatively new to the game.

Speaking of Leopard and the cat like names Apple uses for it's OSX series, I assume they'll continue with this naming scheme for OSX 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 as they still have Lion, Cougar, Bobcat(?) etc that they could use until OS11 which would have to have a new name i'm guessing being the next major (whole number) release.

On closing, i'm not sure how often i'll post here until I get a Mac but I do enjoy visiting/reading these forums.

I imagine they'll continue with the cats, yes.

BTW, don't forget that OS 11 will not necessarily follow OS 10.9. The numbers are not decimal -- 10.10 would be perfectly fine

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

How do you know the numbers aren't considered decimal, as far as Apple sees it? Typically, the version numbers are treated as decimal. Some developers don't conform to this convention, but most do. Have you read somewhere that Apple will not?

Well, we havent gotten above 10.x.9 yet, but we have been significantly below (10.1.5, 10.2.8). I wouldn't be surprised to see Tiger get above 10.4.9 (assuming 10.4.8 ever comes out), but I could also see Apple choosing not to go above .9, so as not to confuse some of their users.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

That's as good a reason to switch as any. I think (once you get over the short initial learning curve) you'll find many aspects of OS X a breath of fresh air.

If you want to save maximum # of pence, by all means hold off until spring '07 (a new Mac will come with both iLife '07 and Leopard at that point, a good deal). You also may want to keep an eye on Apple's refurbished machines at their online Store... which come with the full 1 yr. warranty at 10-30% reduced prices.

Best of luck! Drop by again once you've made the plunge.

10.10 will never happen. 10.10 and 10.1 are the exact same number

In maths yes, in programming not necessarily.

What part of the numbers are not decimal did you not get? Also, what part of the signature guidelines did you not get?

The numbers are clearly not standard decimal, as there are two "decimal point" dots which doesn't make sense in decimal.

Pre decimal, much like the OS.
