This comes up about once per hour, any suggestions?

Try clicking and holding on the "UNKNOWN" bubble. I think that shows where the app is located.

I held down the "UNKNOWN" button and the file path indicated there was an app called "UNKOWN" directly on the hard drive (Macintosh HD -> UNKNOWN). Really weird.

I've viewed all files on the hard drive including invisible files and there's nothing called UNKNOWN. Thus far, the most inexplicable thing to happen to me on a Mac in my 8 years of using them. It hasn't come up yet today, so we'll see what happens. Hopefully I won't be posting in this thread again.

I'd trash the folder UNKNOWN and also see if there's any startup items in UNKNOWN.

If you want to e-mail the UNKNOWN file to chuck1@spambob.net, I'd be interested to look at it. That definitely sounds suspicious.
