Annoying Desktop File Arrangement

I've found lately that when i create new files on my desktop they end up getting stacked in the lower right hand corner of the desktop. I've gone though the view options and finder preferences to try to prevent it from doing this but i'm stumped. What am I missing here?
Mac Pro 8x2.8 | Macbook 2.13 | Saab Trionic 7 (thats right, runs on a 68k!)
