Evening,

Just found out the scary way that Front Row update 1.3 and Front Row Enabler 1.3 are NOT compatible with the PPC 10.4.8 update on my 1.67Ghz PowerBook G4.

I'd installed this under 10.4.7 and it ran like a charm, really great and with Salling Clicker and my SE K800i this was a dream way of achieving the features of a MBP (in part) until I get the cash to upgrade (actually I only recently upgraded to this version of the PBG4 so this will be some time).

I noticed tonight that Front Row has not worked since installing 10.4.8 last night, and decided to re-install from www.andrewescobar.com and www.apple.com. Unfortunately after following the process correctly and attempting a restart my PB would not boot.

I recovered my system by booting my trusty iMac G3 into target disk mode and then booting my PB from this (option + power at startup). I then downloaded the PPC 10.4.8 update and re-installed this onto my PowerBook HDD. Only then could I reboot.

This caused some serious worry, I'm flying off for a business trip in the morning and have no way to rebuild my system from scratch if I'd have done something irreparable.

Guess I just learned an important lesson about:

1) Fiddling with things
2) Picking a bad time to fiddle with things
3) Using the spare room on my 5G iPod to create a bootable version of OS X that I can use for emergency failures to boot from main HDD

This is not a gripe about Andrew Escobar and his software, I've only had good experiences of his work previously, this is about holding off until a 10.4.8 compatible version arrives.

Cheers, thanks for reading and hope that this helps someone out!

/ic

FWIW: I did the same thing. G4Mini (pre-Remote) upgraded to X.4.8 and the boot process locks just before the login window.

What's a bit scary, I just ran an "Archive and Install" and upon reboot... it still wont work. I'm now going to Reformat and Install... not sure what I want more. X.4.8 or Hacked-FrontRow.

I'm thinking FrontRow

Given that this hack has screwed up virtually every single OS update since it was released, why do people a) bother with it or b) forget to uninstall it before updating the OS or c) not wait to install the OS X update until a compatible version has been released beforehand...

Indeed. It frakked things up even before 10.4.8. I've been warning people not to install it for a very long time now.

Looks like it totally uninstalled Front Row, since it isn't even under the System Preferance pane. How frustrating.

I don't think Front Row ever has an icon there.

Now hold on… I just went there and installed Front Row using his 1.3.5 Enabler and it worked quite well.

(I will say that 10.4.7 and the wireless mighty mouse gave me a computer that wouldn't boot, but this one and 10.4.8 worked out.)

For me, it was nice to get the Front Row functionality back, having had it prior to 10.4.7 using Andrew's solution.

To the OP: You used Enabler v.1.3.5, which was released to combat the issue with OS X 10.4.8. Version 1.3 of Enabler worked with OS X 10.4.7, but 10.4.8 broke Front Row, and Enabler 1.3 would not fix things. In fact, it made things worse. Enabler 1.3.5 is what I used, and it worked for me. There are instructions for fixing things, if you tried to use Enabler 1.3 after upgrading to OS X 10.4.8. Once you get things back to normal (with Front Row uninstalled), you can use Enabler 1.3.5 to re-install it.

To Others: The rule here is that Front Row breaks when Apple updates the OS. Wait for Andrew to address the issues with Enabler, and let him release a new version before trying to fix Front Row. There are plenty of people who will test things before you do, and screw things up for themselves, so you don't have to. Let them. Then, ride in and grab Enabler once Andrew blesses it for the new OS version.
