is there any way to assign numbers to files in a finder list, like
1.
2.
3.
etc w/o renaming the files?

I have a large number of PDFs and it would be great if I could sort them that way. any ideas?

Without renaming them? No. How would the Finder possibly know what order you mentally want them to be in?

With renaming them - Automator.

You can type numbers into the Comments section of the Get Info (command-i) window. Then you can sort in the finder by comments.

Peter and you are WRONG. I just tired it and it works as expected.

I used 01, 02, 03, 04 in the Spotlight Comment fields for four files since the Finder has always been kind of dumb when it comes to numbers and sorting. I added the Comments to the list view and clicked to sort it.

If you don't *know*, please don't answer.

Hey I do know, I was the first one to offer that suggestion. But my brief experiment didn't seem to work, that's all (because it seems the Finder will sort items without a comment before those with a comment, even if it is just a number).
