Whenever I try to press the F5 key for certain programs, my macbook wants to turn the sound up instead of doing what the F5 key does for that program.

Any help?

Try pressing the "fn" button! You can change your settings in the system preferences as well.

On Apple laptops, the default is that the function keys do their other function primarily. So by default, adjusting volume is the normal behavior, and holding fn reverses it. You can, as asodamiac said, reverse the behavior by changing the system preferences.
