I have an iBook with Mac 10.2.8 384 Mb Processor 700 MHz 384 Mb PC G3

I want to upgrade the OS to at least Mac OSX v 10.3.9 or newer if possible.

Is this possible?

Where can I get it done in London?

What should I expect to pay?

Thanks. I need all the help you people can give me!

It is possible. All you'll need is a copy of Panther...attainable at many places including ebay. The install is relatively painless, and you could do it yourself and save a little money.

For Tiger, I would max out the RAM in that iBook before I installed, as Tiger likes lots of RAM

I'd recommend that you max out the ram even for Panther, 384Mb is a little meager and with the G3 processor you don't want to add to the bottlenecks.

Panther should run fine with 384Mb of RAM if you don't have too many apps open, but max it out though. You could probably get Panther for around $30 on eBay.

um... you dont need a specialist guy to do it. its all a matter of sticking the cd in the drive, and clicking a few buttons.

you can get panther for about £25 - £35 on ebay.

i haven't looked on ebay, but can i get tiger there (i'm presuming tiger is the later, more 'powerful' version)? how much should i expect to pay? can anybody recommend an ebay dealer so that i don't end up with a pirated, bootleg version full of holes or worse!
thanks again! ps: are the titles on here somewhere???????

i obviously misunderstood. am i correct in saying, that to install a higher RAM, i have to remove and then install a RAM card in my laptop? how difficult is this? how easy is it to buy something off ebay that won't fit in my Mac?

I wouldn't avoid placing OS X 10.4 on the system. Yes, a RAM bump would be ideal.

ok. i'm catching up a bit now! i've looked at the hardware section of this forum and at the how-to section of crucial.com. whilst i'm worried about getting the correct memory cards and about the technique of putting them in. i think i can do it. i need more advice on just what the correct memory cards are and where is best to purchase in the uk. thanks for your help so far! keep it coming!

Crucial memory for iBook G3 700MHz (this is the UK website). Your iBook has 128MB RAM installed by default that can't be removed and it must currently have a 256MB RAM chip in the slot that the user can access. The 256MB chip would have to be removed and be swapped for a 512MB chip. The max RAM possible is 640MB RAM (128MB + 512MB).

Guide to installing RAM (also refer to your iBook user manual)

ok! what we've done so far is purchase the 512 Mb RAM from Crucial here in england. We installed it this morning. the instructions from Crucial were helpful. the Mac instruction book had some diagrams and inside the keyboard were other diagrams. we anticipated lots of problems in actually putting the ram card in place. that mention in the forum of 20 - 30 lbs force to get it in was pretty frightening! in the end it just slotted in and then pushed down! we restarted it and it seems to be running ok! assuming it continues to run ok, i would definitely recommend Crucial (next day delivery also!). WE bought Tiger on Ebay however 5 days later it hasn't been delivery. the chap selling is a business and has good feedback, so hopefully it will arrive tomorrow - monday. We will let you know how that goes. thanks to all of you for your help so far!

the tiger arrived this morning! we had to delete or move to the external hard drive a fair few programs and files so as to have the 3.8 gb space to install it. i'll let you know what happens next in the saga! we paid £45 + £5 p&p from ebay for a Tiger 10.4.3 sealed version on ebay. the box had the apple price of £139 on it.
