About 8 of the icons I had dropped into the left side of the Finder suddenly are missing. Has that happened to anyone else? A restart did not solve the problem. Is that a sign that something more serious (with my OS) is on the horizon?

You mean in the Sidebar? Those are just aliases. Are the original items still there?

Could be a bad pref file, or it could be directory corruption of some sort.

Yes, in the Sidebar. If it is a directory corruption, would it be helpful to run Disk Warrior? (All of the original items are still in place.)

Well, it can't hurt to run Disk Warrior if you've got it. You should rule that out. Back in the OS 10.2 days, one afernoon my Applications folder suddenly had "0 items." I sorta panicked, then booted from my backup drive, & DW fixed me up in about 20 minutes.

I think it's more than likely a corruption of whatever file stores the info about what to show in the sidebar.
