I wanted to use textutil to batch convert all files in a directory (and it's sub directories) from rft to html. I know this is possible but can't figure out the proper CL.

This should do what you want: 
Code:

find . -name "*.rtf" -exec textutil -convert html {} ';'
Run that from the directory you want to recursively convert all files in.
