10.4.8 = no alert sounds?

Just upgraded to 10.4.8 and now dont have any alert sounds (no ichat, no mail etc). But itunes works fine and so does the sound feedback when you change the system volume. Going to the sys pref -> sounds; now shows (under the alert sounds tab) the internal speakers option as faded - so they are not available. There are no hacks on my machine- anybody have a possible fix?

PS tried fixing the permissions already.

Re-apply the combo updater to see if it fixes it.
