Not sure what happened, but now I cannot open my Applications folder via Finder.

A message pops up indicating:
There is no default application specified to open the document "Applications".
Permissions are ok:
drwxrwxr-x 76 root admin 2584 Oct 29 17:10 Applications
If I try to open the Applications folder from a command line, I get this:
% open /Applications/
2006-10-29 17:45:56.103 open[4229] LSOpenFromURLSpec() returned -10814 for application (null) urls file://localhost/Applications/.
I can access the folder via Finder if I cmd-click the folder and select "show package contents".

I tried to change the default Application to open "Applications" back to Finder, but there is no apparent way to do this from cmd-i.

Could be that the bundle bit got set somehow. Download XRay and use it to open the Applications folder. If the check box labeled "Package" is checked, uncheck it and save. See if that fixes it.

Also, check that the filename didn't get an extension (like .rtfd or .bundle or whatever) appended to it somehow.

You may need to log out and back in to see the effects of changing this.

Thank you!!! XRay did the trick:

% file Applications/
Applications/: directory
The bundle bit was set, no idea how though. No extension was added. After unchecking "Package" and saving, I killed Finder to force it to relaunch. Then I could access the Applications folder again without having to log out.

Cheers!

Great, good to hear that that solved your problem.

Be sure to send the author of XRay a registration fee, since it's not very much for such a helpful tool.
