Hi there -

Having a problem with latest version of OS X on my G4 laptop where pkg's don't work. For example, on dot mac there's backup software you can download. What you get on the .dmg then is a .pkg file, or maybe an .mpkg file. When I double-click the pkg file I get an error message saying it's an unknown type of file and asking me to specify an app to open it with.

This is happening with other pkg's for random software I'm picking up on the internet. Any idea what's wrong? Is it a question maybe of specifying what type of application should open these pkg's, and if so, what app do I pick?

thanks

B

Sounds like the Installer application is missing.

How would I go about installing that? Is there any way other than reinstalling the whole OS? I'm on the road and don't have my install disks. Is it the sort of thing that can be installed on its own, and downloaded from the net?

thanks

...so I've found that I do have the installer app on my laptop, but when I try to use it to open the pkg's it doesn't work. Possible to download and/or this on its own?

Try deleting your LaunchServices cache. Go to /Library/Caches, and delete any files whose names start with "com.apple.launchservices". Then reboot and see if it's fixed.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
