Hold down option when you select text in Preview (pdf) or TextEdit, and it selects only the text inside your dragged rectangle, not whole lines like normal. This completely transforms my PDF reading in Preview, it's like night and day. Did everyone else know about this?

Yep, and it works in every Cocoa app that uses the standard NSTextView widget.

Don't tell that to the "There's no difference between Carbon and Cocoa!!" zealots, though.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Word version 4 on Mac System 6 would do it also! They called it something weird like noncontiguous text selection.

Yeah, Tiger introduced several NSTextView enhancements. You can also make multiple selections by holding in command (either in combination with the option-select method or just on its own).

Why don't these work in Safari? And does Preview use an NSTextView?
