I bought an older Imac and the hard drive was slicked. Its a 500mhz non DV Imac with a gig of memory. I can't get os 10.1 to install. I keep getting a greyish screen and a blue folder alternating a question mark, and the "smiley mac face". Any help would be great!! Thanks--Jeremie

Have you tried holding in option while the computer starts to see if you can select a disk? Otherwise it sounds like you've got a bad CD.

I tried holding option and I can't select anything. Although I do have two buttons with arrows inside that take me knowhere. One of the buttons has a circular arrow within the button on the right side of the screen, and the other button has an arrow pointing to the right that also takes me knowwhere. Can I download an operating system somewhere?

Are you sure you have a complete 10.1 system CD? 10.1 was released as a free update on update CDs only and not available for purchase as far as I can remember. You might need to install 10.0 first and then update to 10.1.
You can not download Mac OS X.

There were 10.1 install CDs. I bought one. Even if it were an upgrade CD, it should show up as a valid volume.

What are the installation steps to installing an operating system on an Imac? Does anyone have an OS from 9.2 to later that I can download or have some idea about getting an OS going? Thanks for your time--Jeremie

Legally, you can download System 7.5. Which you don't want and isn't going to work. OS X will work on that machine, maybe you should look for a cheap copy of 10.2 or 10.3? Either would be way better than 10.1
