I am used to having to Defragment hard drives on the PC. Is this necessary on the Mac and if so is there a good program to buy to do it or does this come with the computer?

As of 10.4.x, there is no included utility to defrag. The system will defrag certain files in the background that are not too big, and the Mac file system (HFS+) is resistant to file fragmentation anyway.

The average user does not need to defrag, and will not benefit from a defrag until they've used a disk for a few years. Even then, the speedup won't be very much.
