Hi,

I have been reading a lot about creating USB drivethat can auto launch and mount an encrpyted volume as well as run applications upon insertion. However, all that I have read is in regards to Windos. I was wondering if it was possible to create such a usb drive for the mac?

Hopefully auto-running applications is and will remain impossible to do. Insert USB stick, run virus/trojan/spyware. How moronic it would be to enable that possibility... especially on Windows.

Well if you are "promiscuous" with your USB port then you deserve the virus/trojan/spyware. I am talking about giving yourself access to your data when/where there might not be a connection or to troubleshoot an issue.

With windows, I'd never recommend it. With a Mac however, there's not much that could go wrong, especially since you'll be the one creating the self-launching app.

I don't think Automator can quite do what you want, but look into Applescript. You'll have to learn a few commands, but I bet with enough research, an Applescript could do it.

There is an app called PeripheralVision that can probably do this.
But, it seems to be unsupported at this point, and it definitely isn't compatible with the new Intel based Macs...

There is plenty that could go wrong if this was something made possible at the level of the OS. It would be trivial to create an Applescript or terminal command that deleted the contents of your home folder. OK, it would be harder to affect other accounts, but would you really like to have the potential for losing all your own stuff that easily?
