So I was wanted to make a smart folder, thinking it would function the same way as they do in iTunes, but apparently they don't. I have a folder called "Extras" where I put all miscellaneous files, and I also have that folder store everything I download from Safari.

I wanted to make a smart folder in "Extras" where everytime I download a .dmg, it would automatically move into the smart folder. I don't want just a saved search. Would this be possible with just smart folders, or would I need applescript to do this as well?

Smart folders are basically just saved searches. And therefore they do behave the same as in iTunes since smart playlists don't store anything either. They too are just a saved search for tunes that are stored in your library.

You might be able to do what you want with Folder Actions.

I was thinking with Automator, but then again I've never actually used Automator.

well the thing with automator is that once I create the workflow I would have to manually run it everytime i download something new. I tried the Folder Actions but there is such a limited number of actions in it. Is there a way to install more?

You can write your own folder actions using AppleScript and attach them to folders. You can also find scripts on the Web that you can download and use. What you want to do is totally possible, but you may need to download a folder action and then tweak it so that it looks for disk images, unless you find that someone wrote one to do exactly what you want.
