Some files appeared in my hard disk and though I now know I shouldn't have, I trahsed them. Now when rebooting I get a black screen which has the text "launchd: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: No such file or directory".

What do I do now?

Thanks

try reinstalling your OS
You should be able to boot from the iBook's system disc and reinstall WITHOUT deleting your data.

If you have some important data that you don't want lose, as a precaution it might be a good idea to boot your iBook into target FireWire disk mode (hold t while the iBook is booting, while it is connected via FireWire to another Mac I think.)

The iBook should appear as a hard drive on the other Mac, and you can drag any important files you want to back up from the iBook to the other computer.

Good luck!

Unless he choses to "Erase and Install," a reinstall or Archive and Install will not cause him to lose any of his data. With that said, backups are A Good Thing.
