seems like 1/3 of the time i want sound, there ain't none

then i ck the system preferences and the mute is checked and grayed out so i cant' unck it

restarting usually solves the problem, but ther has to be a better explanation/solution, no?

oh, when the mute is on and grayed out, i've noticed itunes and audion (yes, i still use audion) frequently don't work (??!!)

10.4.8

thanks for any help - - tis annoying!

What sound out device are you using? You have less control over the volume and whatnot of a "Line out" device like the optical audio out.

Does this happen after a fresh reboot, is it intermittant, etc? Also, what kind of Mac are you on?

G5

yes, the sound goes out intermittently

i have speakers hooked up but they are NOT the problem. i experimented during a no-sound phase and i got no sound from the mac speaker either

i'm using "digital out"

it seems totally random,a nd weirdly, as i mentioned, seems to incapacitate audion/itunes too!

just wondering if the sound is glitchy in 10.4.8, i guess; i.e. have others had their mute button grayed out as well so you can't un-mute it?

It sounds like a software problem. Did you experience it prior to 10.4.8?

i don't believe so, no. it's a fairly recent development

so why aren't more people reporting this problem? or am just i being picked on? ; )

p.s. is there a solution?

thanks!
