finder, preview, safari, mail all crash when viewing GIF files.

firefox and photoshop can view them fine.

this didn't used to happen, but started after one of the OS or perhaps quicktime updates. I cannot use Safari or mail because of this.

i have a powerbook 1.25 G4

its something to do with this:

Weird. Try reinstalling the latest system update from the combo updater and see if that fixes it. Definitely not a common bug.

Finder, Preview, Safari, and Mail != Mac. Please be a little more specific in your titles.

I think thats what its gonna take - but I was trying to avoid such a time consuming process. Thanks.

ImageIO.framework == part of OS X == Mac.

I'd try an Archive and Install.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

For what it's worth, running the Combo Updater doesn't take very long at all depending on your Mac. 15 minutes tops I would think.

part of OS X != the entire system. "My Mac crashed" to me means the whole thing froze up, as in a KP.

You 2 and I are the only ones here who understand this.

I found a solution in case anyone is interested.

replace

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources/libGIF.dylib

with the one from the install DVD.

Better yet replace it with the one from the 10.4.8 update, since my libGIF.dylib has a creation date that indicates something was change around that time, most likely security related.
