Hi,

I've just purchased a used ibook G3 500mhz.

I'm not familiar with anything other than OS X 10.4 and am having a few problems such as ...when I download a program - msn messenger for example - the .dmg appears on the desktop but when I click it it does nothing. What am I doing wrong? It bounces the mounting icon in the dock and then disappears.

Also, when I plug my USB pen drive into the ibook it does not appear in the finder; same goes for my CF card reader. iphoto sees my card reader but I dont use iphoto for downloading. I just want to transfer files to a folder on my desktop.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks very much

Hi JonK,

The bouncing dock problem with .dmg files might be corrected if you repair disk permissions with Disk Utility. If that doesn't do the trick, try restarting the computer. I sometimes have that problem and restarting usually solves it.

Do you have a copy of DiskWarrior? If you do, I'd recommend using it to repair any possible problems you might have on the iBook.

I don't know what's causing the USB problems - sorry. I'm not on my iBook now, but the next time I'm on it, I'll check the OS 10.2.8 preferences to see if there's anything there that might be causing the problem.

hi claire,

i repaired the disk permissions - success! Loading programs now. thanks.
That also fixed my problem with the pen drive.
But now I'm not sure how to eject the mounted drives...theres no eject button beside the pen drive or MSN messenger image in finder.

thanks

Just drag it to the Trash or highlight the drive's icon and select Eject from the File menu.
