I'd been using 10.4.7 for a while with no problems, and right after I updated to 10.4.8, the machine won't even boot up. It hangs on the screen which says "Mac OS X starting up.....". My machine is a quicksilver 933 G4. I tired restarting many times and it never makes it past that screen, no matter how long I wait.

I guess I'm going to have to reinstall the entire OS again. There must be something new in the 10.4.8 update that doesn't gel well with my machine. I have a few PCI cards installed, but removing them is not really an option, because I use them.

I wish there was an easy way to revert back to 10.4.7 from 10.4.8, but I guess there's not.

Screw 10.4.8, I'm copying the important bits of my drive as I type this, and I'm about to do a fresh install of tiger, and I'll just upgrade it to 10.4.7 again.

Well I'm back in business ! I just copied over 20 gigs of data, I wiped the drive, reinstalled, and now I'm back on 10.4.7. and I only wasted an hour of my time, so it could have been worse I guess.

try installing .8 now.. it probably wont screw your install again if you did a fresh install.

Hey, thanks, you were right. I was kind of frustrated, so I wasn't even thinking about trying 10.4.8 again, but I just did and it went ok. I might as well have tried it now right after the fresh install before I moved some of my data back onto the drive. If something went wrong again, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but luckily it went smooth.

Personally, I would have tried to diagnose the problem first - you should have tried safe booting the computer (hold shift down as you power on and keep it held down) to disable all third party kexts etc to see if it was a conflict between e.g. the drivers for your PCI cards and the updated OS. If it booted OK it would have saved you a lot of effort as you would then know to check for updates to your drivers or known issues etc.

I just tried to load 10.4.8 for about the third time thru Software Update download. Well we all know that a watched up-grade never loads. So I amble off. I get back and don’t restart, I know that might be where the problems lies. However, there was never a prompt to restart only something to the extent that the update was successful. So I start the other up-dates. I amble off again and return to kernel panic! So I reboot and try again. Says update successful. Reboot machine hangs on start. Finally get it to boot and there it is 10.4.6. So in reality it was never successful. So downloaded again and this was the combined update and still no luck. So off to the Apple site and I downloaded the PPC 10.4.8

Download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...updateppc.html

So now I try yet again now this time I get to where I want to install the update and I point to the PowerBook internal drive. The install program comes back and tells me ther isn’t enough space to install 80+megs of update. I go OH NO!. I really haven’t loaded just a hand full of stuff on this thing so I’m a little confused. I look at the drive and there is 19 gigs free space. It also turned off my Airport. So yes does .8 screw up a G4? I would have to agree. I did do a safe boot before trying the last install no luck.

So I would wait a little bit to let the dust settle on this upgrade before you install. DANGER Will Robinson Danger. I don’t normally have a problem with these things but now I’m off with my install disks to wipe the drive and start anew!

Yes that's right once agin I moved just a little to quick to see 10.4.7 required!
Just goes to show that you really do need to read the directions even if its a Mac. But I'll go stand in the corner next to John Kerry ....but he wears the hat!
