When I first got my new mac and had turned it on for the first time, one step of the set up process had me take a photo of myself. Its the one used for iChat, Address Book and such. I've searched high and low but cant find the full res image anywhere. Is it lurking around anywhere on my drive?

you could always just use photo booth to take a new one.

Since it is in Address Book just drag it out of there onto the desktop.

dragging it out of address book only drags out the thumbnail.
I'm wondering if the full res version is somewhere on the disc or if it was discarded after i proceeded to the next step

Look in /Library/Caches. There should be a file called com.apple.userXXXpictureCache.userImage, where XXX is your user number. Copy that to your desktop, and stick ".jpg" on the end, and it should open as a JPEG.

Ooh, closer chrismear. I found the file, but it was only the 8k thumbnail. I guess the full size one was discarded. Thanks anyways guys!

The image should still be in Photo Booth. Try opening Photo Booth and look in the bottom panel for the image. Just drag the image to your desktop and you'll have a copy of the full size picture.
