Or actually, a barcode scanner that emulates a keyboard... How do I get the "unrecognized keyboard" routine to skip through the "press the key next to the shift key" part so I can manually select the type of keyboard the scanner's supposed to emulate?

Just keep pressing keys or scanning barcodes in your case. After about 3 or so non Shift keys it lets you choose.

ControllerMate

I strongly recommend you try this. I used this to successfully program all the extra keys on a cheap Dell keyboard I picked up. It worked so well, I registered the software within hours of having it. Hope that helps!
