Hi all,
If I set permissions on a file to 'everyone' read/write, should everyone be able to read/write? Seems logical to me, but some of the permission groups are a bit befuddling.

My wife and I used to share the iTunes Music Folder, but no the Library files so that we could both have our own playlists and, most importantly, our own ratings. This, however, is just too much of a PITA when it comes to iPod syncing, so I am switching over to a system of sharing everything. I put the Library files in a folder in user Shared and then made aliases to them from our own iTunes folders. I set the group to 'everyone' and set permissions to read/write, but I can't open the file (my wife can as owner). I checked in Terminal and all seems well:

drwxrwx--- + 275 me wheel 9350 Nov 24 15:11 Music
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wife everyone 6715745 Nov 25 07:45 iTunes Library
-rw-rw-rw- 1 wife everyone 5964165 Nov 22 18:15 iTunes Music Library.xml

Am I misusing the 'everyone' group?

thanks,
kman

While I"m on the topic, is there a good GUI for interfacing with ACLs? Does anyone know if this is going to be improved in Leopard? I know they have added some interesting things to the Accounts Pref Pane for dealing with groups and sharing. Can anyone offer more on this?

My Unix days go all the way back to the mid-80's. But I'm not sure how OS X organizes users. I went to a prompt and typed "id" to see what groups I was in:

appserveradm, appserveruser, admin

No "everyone" group listed. So maybe not everyone is in the "everyone" group by default.

Huh, yeah, I just checked and I'm in the same groups as you. I guess I need to fire up the ACLs or make a new group. Probably easier to use ACLs...

If you're both Admins, just change the group to admin.
