I love the new Macbook, but I am having trouble with applications. I cannot get anything that did not ship with the machine to run. Photopshop, Office2004, Abiword, etc. all die after one bounce in the dock.
I suspect this is a Rosetta issue, but I cannot figure out how to work around the problem.

That does sound like a Rosetta issue. Is the MacBook totally new, or had you run anything (like perhaps Monoligual) before this started happening? There are some "system optimization" apps that strip out the PowerPC code from the system frameworks, which makes them smaller but also makes Rosetta not work.

shoot...that was it. I ran mono to get rid of the preinstalled languages....and like a dork I let it do the ppc stuff as well. Anyway to recover without a reinstall? I dont see any disks from this new machine other than OSX (no isuite etc).

Monolingual really needs to warn people about what will happen if they strip out PowerPC code. That seems to happen to quite a few people.
I don't think there is a way to restore the system without reinstalling. But you don't have to do a clean install. Choose "archive and install" (and check the box to keep your old users) and it'll reinstall the system but move all the stuff it's replacing into a "Previous System" folder so you can just drag it back if you need it.
Also, I think the bundled apps are included on the system restore DVDs.

I love monolingual. But it is powerful medicine and it will do exactly what you tell it to do. Glad the reinstall worked! Now you can run monolingual again!
