I'm upgrading my powerbook G4 hard drive from the current 80 GB drive to the Seagate 160 GB drive. Also buying an external firewire drive enclosure. What's the best way to transfer my user folders and applications to the new drive? My thought was to first put the new drive into the firewire enclosure and install OS X on it, then drag and drop my user folders to the new drive. Seems to me that should work. I could do the same for the Applications folder, but don't they also depend on the Library folder? Would replacing a freshly created Library folder with an old be asking for trouble? And are there any other folders I should be concerned about? Or would a better approach be do make a total system backup and restore to the new drive. I have Apple's Backup but don't particularly like it. I've heard of disk cloning apps. Would that be the better way to go?
Thanks in advance!

I think you should use a utility for the job. You could clone the old drive on to the new drive using Disk Utility, for example. That's the route I'd take.

Use the Migration Assistant in /Applications/Utilities. It has an option for "external firewire HD" so use that option, with your old drive in an enclosure.

… or use the Migration Assistant.
Edit: Cat One beat me to it.
