I'm curious to know if it's possible or how to retrieve files downloaded by Software Update,

I have server Macs, and some are not connected to the net because of their purpose and function, and for example, Aperture is much better with the new versions since 1.0 and my machine can update fine, but I need these other machines to be updated as well.

Now is there a way to retrieve the file that Software Update downloads before it installs?

Yes, in the Update menu of Software Update select Install and Keep.

Thank you! And how would I be able to copy the update to other computers?

You can also get all the latest updates from the support pages of the apple website.

And how do I set this? It's greyed out, and as soon as I click "OK" or "Cancel" the app quits.

You would probably need to have an update highlighted for the menu item to be active.

The commands work on the updates that are checked. If no updates are pending the commands are greyed out of course.

My Software Update window's buttons say "Quit" and "Install", so we're not talking about the same program it seems.

The Software Update "Update" drop-down menu provides for Download Only, Install and Keep Package, etc.
