Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.

it said this twice and then said rebuilding catalog and then after about 5 minutes it spit out something to the effect of I give up and am turning off.

What can I do?

Get Diskwarrior ASAP and run the repair by booting up from the CD by holding down the C key at startup. You could try booting in single user mode (command-S at startup) and running 'fsck' as by the directions on the screen, but I would be wary of using the TechTool repair disk that comes with Tiger to fix this. With the catalog B-tree being messed, up I would trust only DW to repair that. DW is an excellent, must have investment, it has saved countless situations like this. Also, if it cannot fix things it may help you recover your data.

If at all possible I would strongly urge you to connect your computer to an external drive, boot from there holding the option key at startup and backup your data. After the DW repair, then use TechTool to scan your HD to make sure it isn't failing. Good luck.

thanks a lot! used dw4 to rebuild it and then replaced and tada! it boots up fine now.

I found it easier to hold option on startup and select the cd rather than pressing C mostly because it took so long and I didn't know if things were going wrong or not.

macnn is such a great to place to come when I need help, mostly in part due to users like you!

By the way Johnpop- did you have a windows partition on your HD and then you got rid of the partition? I too have longer than average boot times after I got rid of my windows partition, but never bothered to check it in verbose mode.

what key do you hold down to get into verbose mode?

no, its full of HFS+ goodness!

hmmm, i love verbose mode because it takes so long and I want to make sure things are going well during such a long boot. I wonder if I can turn it on permanently.. hi google.com

OSX 10.4 2.5 G5 quad

I am having the same problems but in addition to this nothing will run form CD either. I somehow got it to start yesterday (I let it run forever in error mode)and it ran last night but it did restart itself, not sure why but it came back ok.

Today i wanted to run a check with DW so i restarted it with the disk in the drawer I held down "c" got the chime got the gray apple screen and the wheel ... then... nothing wheel stops fans start going full tilt wheel starts again and then the circle with the line through it and absolutely nothing. Anti climatic i know but annoying as hell. I hate hijacking threads but it sounded so similar I wanted to see what the same people thought if the situation was exactly the same but 1 step further.

well sometimes it will get to the point of the progress bar get a sliver of blue and it stops, fans grind away as fast as they can and then nothing it just stays there. the blue bar does not do it's swirling blue light it all just stopps and the cursor won't move.
