G4 450 DP: Stock, except for a RAM update and OS 10.3x. Classic OS 9 is not installed.

I had a startup error where the screen says something like the computer needed to be restarted, so I did that. This really only happened after I installed Norton.

Then I did the CMD-OPT-O-F restart after the three chimes.

Now - all that I get is the grey screen with the Apple logo and nothing more. I ran the OSX utility and it said the drive was OK. The drive can still be OK, but the OS toast, correct?

Can zapping the PRAM have an effect on the RAM (ruin it)?

What else can I do?

right.

the grey screen freeze was something called a "kernel panic". its where the computer shuts off because theres been a big problem. somtimes it can be software, or a hardware problem.

i suppose you meant CMD-OPT-P-R, because the combo that you said would have booted it into open firmware.

it might be norton that has buggered your machine (in that case, you might have to reinstall OS X), or, it could be bad ram.

try reinstalling OS X, and tell us how it goes.

(BTW: forget norton.)

I re-installed OS X, but it still gave errors. I essentially had to erase the HD and install OS X again. It now works perfect.

The computer was working GREAT until I installed Norton. After the Norton install, it kept crashing until only the grey screen appeared on start up.

I did not install any other hardware of software, so either I installed Norton wrong or it's problematic software.

Yes, DO NOT install Norton. Symantec really screwed up with their OS X effort, and it has been said often enough that Norton on OS X is the closest OS X has come to getting malware.

No, I won't install it ever again. Funny thing is, I've been running Macs since 1993 and NEVER had a problem....which, is in stark contrast to my XP machines which absolutely need all of the virus protection that they can get.

Do a search on this forum to see what Norton has done for OS X
You don't really need any maintenance app, apart from cocktail...

Glad to know that you've sorted it.
